A Grief Simile

There’s a suitcase we’ve been carrying since our person died.

It’s a suitcase we always have with us.

Some days it’s almost too heavy to lift. Some days it’s easier to carry.

There are times we leave it outside a room—a classroom, an office, a store—in order to function.

There are times we carry it into a space—a conversation, a session, an unexpected moment—and functioning is hard.

No matter the situation, we know that suitcase is always there—it’s there waiting for us.  And we will pick it up, again.

And again.

We learn to carry it.
